Understanding Giclee Prints: What You Need to Know

  • What is a Giclée Print?

A giclée (gee-clay) print is a high quality fine art print of an original artwork. It is produced using specialized inkjet technology. Printed with archival ink on acid free archival paper for longevity.

  • Why do you make Giclée prints available?

Giclee prints are more affordable than original art. I appreciate everyone who purchases any of my art - printed or original. Now that I’ve been offering Giclee prints for several years I love that some collectors add a new print to their collection every year.

Several of the Giclées offered since 2021

  • Should you mix giclée with original art?

Yes! I love a gallery wall. Mixing & matching various sizes & styles & colors & frames on one wall & enjoying how they all play together. It began when I was a little kid (wish I had a picture of it) when I taped all my favorite images on the inside of my closet door. Photos, originals, prints, maps - anything goes.

  • Are your cards & calendar also giclée?

No. The cards & calendars are produced by a commercial printshop on a standard printer. They are high quality & you can certainly pop any of them into a frame & enjoy it for a long time but they are not archival.

  • How do you choose which images should be reproduced as a giclee?

My simpler compositions tend to make the best prints. I select drawings that appeal to me. Then I survey you. Once a year I send a survey to my email news subscribers. The results always surprise me but I always listen to the survey. I rely on YOU to make the final selection so make sure you join my email list .

Occasionally I will get a custom order for a particular image & make more available to you. This year’s Seahorse giclée came about from a custom order.

  • Once a Giclee is made how long is it available for purchase?

I add a few each year & generally let a few go each year too - Little Grey Mouse is a perennial favorite & the very first giclée I offered so he stays every year.

  • What sizes are the Giclées available in?

The most popular size are backed & matted for a 9” x 12” or 12” x 9” frame. Occasionally I produce larger giclées ready for a 16” x 20” frame. Every giclée is created to fit into a standard frame size.

  • Why are only a select group of giclées available in the 6” x 6” Gilt frames?

The small square gilt frames are made especially for me by a framer in Maine & I love them! The drawings that work best for these frames are usually square too.

  • Do you accept orders for custom size giclees?

Of course! I love to work with you on custom orders. Email me emer@artbyemermccourt.com and we can see what we can do:-)
